ARTC Level Crossing Monitoring

The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) is undertaking a review of the safety of more than 2,700 road level crossings across the NSW rail network.  They will be focusing on four areas to improve level crossing safety across their rail network:

  • Review and close unsafe level crossings.
  • Upgrade crossings to current standards.
  • Educate people to stop and look at all level crossings.
  • Support law enforcement and safe driving practices.

Liverpool Plains Shire Mayor, Mr Doug Hawkins OAM said as a widespread Council area many of our community members live kilometres from their nearest town and consequently use numerous railway crossings.  We welcome the review by ARTC as Council values the safety and wellbeing of our community members, and those that travel within our Shire.

“The review will play an important role in maintaining high standards of rail track conditions to allow safer, more reliable and efficient operations, and to develop better methods of educating people on the dangers of level crossings.  It will also provide information to better understand how level crossings are being used so we can plan for the future,” he said.

ARTC have trialled a specialised piece of equipment to observe, measure road user behaviour and report if road users safely stop at the level crossing. The equipment looks like a large yellow generator and will be placed at Coonabarabran Road level crossing at Caroona from May 2022.  The information collected will not be used for law enforcement purposes.
