Liverpool Plains Shire Council is continuing to progress with the implementation of the Waste Management Strategy adopted by Council in 2018. The Strategy aims to fulfil Council’s vision to maintain and improve on a reliable, independent and sustainable waste management system for LPSC’s residents.
The Caroona, Spring Ridge, Premer and Werris Creek sites has seen the construction of security fencing commenced
The rehabilitation of the Caroona, Spring Ridge, Premer and Pine Ridge landfill sites has also commenced and once the Werris Creek Waste Transfer Station is operational, rehabilitation of the landfill there will be undertaken.
Work on the development of the new landfill at Willow Tree is well underway. A comprehensive environmental impact statement is presently being finalised along with the design of the new landfill. Once completed an application will be made to Council for a Development Approval to allow the project to progress to construction. The expected completion of the new landfill at Willow Tree is June 2023.
Mayor, Cr Doug Hawkins OAM said that this is another key step in Council’s more than $5.8 million, 10-year Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Waste Strategy. The Liverpool Plains Waste Management Facility has an expected lifespan of 30 years and will contain all of the waste in the Liverpool Plains Shire.
“Council has been successful in securing about $3.4 million in grants through the Resources for Regions program administered by the Minister for Regional NSW, the Hon Paul Toole MP, which will help cover the cost of these works,” Cr Hawkins said.
“As Council approaches the rehabilitation of most landfills in the shire and the opening of the Liverpool Plains Waste Management Facility in 2023, we will all be tightly focussing on reusing, recycling and reducing the waste we throw out every week. Recycling reduces the amount of material going into landfill and helps with the re-use of materials which saves energy and valuable resources.” he said.
