Liverpool Plains Shire Council Community Hub hosts Scamwatch webinar
Published on 17 November 2021
The Liverpool Plains Shire Council’s Community Hub hosted a Scamwatch webinar to encourage community members to be aware of scams that impact every day.
The Community Hub’s CommBox screen enabled the small group of locals to join in on this important state-wide initiative, which had a goal to encourage people to talk with each other about scams.
The webinar highlighted some of the common types of scams, how to spot a scam, the difference between a scam and faulty goods/work, and who to contact for help.
Council’s General Manager, Jo Sangster said the Community Hub was starting to gather momentum as a venue for community events. The Quirindi Toastmasters Club has held its regular meeting in the Hub, while a local real Estate Agent has also used the Community Hub to run a property auction.
According to Scamwatch, in 2020 Australians made more than 216,000 reports to Scamwatch and reported losses of around $178 million.
By the end of September this year, Australians had lost even more: Scamwatch received more than 226,000 reports with reported losses of over $222 million.
